Treasures in Baden-Württemberg & Bavaria
Lautenbach, Dinkelsbühl
We're back! Tired but relaxed! Everyday started with a 10-12km hike in the area and then afternoon visiting some historical sites combined with some caches and in the evening a brisk, 4km walk to aid the digestion of the rich Schwarzwald cuisine...
During these walks we crossed paths with several deer, spotted many birds of prey, some herons and spotted 2 red squirrels who looked like they were following us, leaping from treetop to treetop! THAT WAS A GREAT SHOW!
If you are interested in watermills... this is the place to be. Must be a mill every 2km. Our hotel used to be a mill.
Found 10 traditionals, mostly historical or culture sites but also a very modern site (cityparking block). There were several DNFs : at "Riesen-Rad" the location was turned into a jumble sale for childrens toy.
At Wachttürm there were HUGE, red ants guarding ground zero, I could see the soldiers wielding their impressive jaws at me. I was wearing open, hiking sandals and in shorts... so i wisely backed off... I HATE ANTS!
And 2 caches we just didnt find coz ... we gave up looking.
On thursday, last day before heading back home, the idea was to relax, do a short walk to a cache and that's it. the cache page stated a 3 to 4 km walk. At that point we werent to sure if he meant 4km to and 4km back from the cache or a combined walk of 4km.
Eitherway would be good as it was in the woods. TomTom placed the destitnation smack on the motorway, so took an option and clicked a nearby road.
Drove up to that starting point and set out for a 1km walk... bugger, the arrows is pointing 1,5km towards the otherside of the motorway. Walked up and down the motorway in search of a bridge or tunnel... NADA. OK... back to the car. (combined walk of 3,5km on this side of the motorway).
Then arrived at OUR starting point on the otherside of the motorway. Arrow pointing 3,5km into the woods, so we equip for a short walk and set off into the woods over easy paths.
Marvelous woods! Some interesting spots, however, all roads may lead to Rome but these woodpaths do not all lead to the cache! As a matter of fact : they all lead somewherelse BUT the cache? :-) Meaning we're crisscrossing paths to get nearer to this TRADITIONAL !
After 6,4km the arrow is pointing 100m straight into the woods, no more path to take. Now its bushwacking time! LOVE THIS BIT.
Arrived at ground zero and quickly found the cache. Enjoyed the "find", took some pictures, dropepd some pathtags. Some of the "rationed" water for us and the dogs :-) and then head back.
The way back was only 6km so the way in was well navigated. I have to point out this is without a map of the area.
The grande finale on the last day :-)
